Lupus can affect many systems of the body, which is why careful diagnosis, flare planning, and coordinated care are important.

Lupus

Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the body’s own tissues. The most common form is systemic lupus erythematosus, often called SLE. Because lupus can affect many systems, symptoms may involve the skin, joints, kidneys, heart, lungs, blood, nerves, and brain. Some patients have mostly joint pain, fatigue, and skin symptoms. Others may develop kidney disease, chest pain, blood abnormalities, neurologic symptoms, or other organ involvement.

Lupus is often unpredictable. Symptoms may improve for a period and then become more active during a flare. This can be frustrating for patients because the condition may not always be visible to others, and symptoms can shift over time. A diagnosis-first approach helps determine whether symptoms are due to active lupus, another autoimmune condition, a medication issue, a pain condition, or a combination of factors.

What Lupus Symptoms May Look Like

Lupus symptoms vary widely. Many patients experience painful or swollen joints, morning stiffness, fatigue, fever, rashes, sun sensitivity, hair loss, or sores in the mouth or nose. A butterfly-shaped rash across the cheeks and nose is often associated with lupus, but not every patient has this rash. Some patients develop Raynaud’s phenomenon, where fingers or toes change color in response to cold or stress. Others may have swollen glands, swelling in the legs or around the eyes, chest pain with deep breathing, headaches, dizziness, confusion, numbness, shortness of breath, or changes in urine.

What Causes Lupus?

The exact cause of lupus is not fully understood. Researchers believe lupus develops through a combination of immune system factors, genetics, hormones, and environmental triggers. Potential triggers may include sunlight, viral infections, smoking, certain medications, and other exposures. Lupus is more common in women, especially during the ages of 15 to 45, and is also more common in some racial and ethnic groups. Risk factors do not mean a person will develop lupus, but they may help guide clinical suspicion when symptoms are present.

The important point is that lupus is not simply joint pain, fatigue, or a rash. It is an immune-mediated disease that can affect organs and requires medical evaluation. Patients should not self-diagnose lupus based on symptoms alone or start, stop, or change medications without guidance from a healthcare professional.

How Lupus Is Diagnosed

Lupus diagnosis usually involves multiple pieces of information.
